Stossel and his Industry Mouthpieces Are at It Again

In 2000, John Stossel gave ABC News a black eye with
his falsehoods, half-truths, and industry-funded
mouthpieces on his Feb. 4 "20/20" report, "The Food
You Eat," essentially a hatchet job on organic food
production. After the truth came out, he was forced to
apologize on the air.

Not that he reformed. John Stossel's ABC assault on
environmentalists relies on industry-funded "experts"
incorrect "facts," selected and twisted facts, and the
exclusion of facts that might call his allegations
into question. In addition to misinformation, Stossel
builds his case almost exclusively on logical
fallacies: straw men, card-stacking, red herrings,
begging the question, glittering generalities, band
wagon, and if I forgot any, the chances are Stossel
did not. He raises logical fallacy to an art form,
presenting unqualified or biased sources, representing
opinions as facts, offering overgeneralizations or
faulty generalizations, attributing effects to
incorrect causes, using faulty comparisons, either/or
reasoning to force interviewees activists and viewer
to choose between two extreme positions, resting
arguments on unsound premises, offering irrelevant
ideas or facts as support for his conclusions.

The first straw man he fashions, an alleged
environmentalist claim that humans should return to
primitive living, becomes the framework of his
argument. He spends the rest of the program taking
shots at his own straw man. He argues against what
"many people say." Apparently he cannot find anyone
idiotic enough to actually make the statements he
wants to counter, so Stossel makes them himself,
prefaced by "many people say." He overgeneralizes to
say that environmentalistS claim wE should not "tamper
with nature" AT ALL, rather than in selected cases
such as releasing new potentially destructive
transgenes to multiply throughout the food supply and
earth's ecosystems. The straw man/rebuttal strategy is
repeated throughout.

...Stossel's scientific experts' funding sources were
not revealed, One industry-funded mouthpiece, PATRICK
MICHAELS, alleged that a huge amount of funding
motivates scientists to say emissions are a factor in
global warming. Laughable, when you see where the
money is really coming from. Here are Stossel's
experts.
...
2. PATRICK J. MICHAELS, Ph.D., Associate Professor,
Dept. of Environmental Sciences, University of
Virginia. Virginia State Climatologist. American
Association of State Climatologists and Program Chair
of the Applied Climatology Committee of the American
Meteorological Society. Funding from and/or was
underwritten by the WESTERN FUELS ASSOCIATION (a
consortium of coal interests), German and American
coal interests, Cyprus Minerals Company. (Ozone
Action, http://www.Ozone.org (3-1-2000); and Ross
Gelbspan, The Heat is On (Perseus Books, 1998
updated.), pp. 40-3, 202-11). Scientific advisor for
the GREENING EARTH SOCIETY which is funded by the
WESTERN FUELS ASSOCIATION.

...For PATRICK J MICHAELS, people like Atwood are part
of the problem. Michaels, a professor of environmental
science at the University of Virginia, penned an
article titled ‘Mitch – That Son of a Gun’. He
attacked Atwood’s remarks as ‘White House
huckstering... If there’s any possible way to conflate
human suffering with global warming, the Clinton
administration will do so... Rumors persist that Vice
President Gore has been advised to make global warming
a central theme of his presidential run in 2000.
Threatening hundreds of thousands with imminent
drowning unless they vote for him is a crude but
probably effective trick.’

Michaels’ commentary was printed in the WASHINGTON
TIMES and the Journal of Commerce. Rewritten as local
editorials, it appeared in newspapers as far apart as
the Wisconsin State Journal and the Wyoming
Tribune-Eagle. ‘Just how stupid does the Clinton
administration think we are?’ asked the version that
appeared in the Tribune-Eagle.

Stupid enough, apparently, that none of these outlets
bothered to check Michaels’ credentials. If they had,
they would have found that Michaels is part of a small
but vocal minority of industry-funded climatologists
who dispute the mounting evidence which suggests that
global warming is a consequence of modern industrial
activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels. By
his own account, Michaels has received more than
$165,000 in funding from FUEL COMPANIES, including
funding for a non-peer-reviewed journal he edits
called WORLD CLIMATE CHANGE. He has served as a paid
expert witness for utilities in lawsuits, appears on
television and radio and testifies before government
bodies. At the time Hurricane Mitch struck, he was
also a ‘SENIOR FELLOW’ AT THE CATO INSTITUTE, a
right-wing, industry-funded think-tank that campaigns
against ‘unnecessary’ and ‘harmful’ environmental
regulations.

Third-party technique
The use of scientists as spokespersons for corporate
interests is an example of a public-relations strategy
known within the trade as ‘the third party technique’.
Merrill Rose, Executive Vice-President of the
public-relations firm Porter/Novelli, sums it up
succinctly: ‘Put your words in someone else’s mouth.’
Remember the TV commercials with actors in lab coats
pretending to be doctors and claiming that nine out of
ten of their colleagues prefer a specific brand of
aspirin? With commercials you are on your guard. But
put the message in the mouth of someone like PATRICK
MICHAELS and you have a ‘real scientist’ speaking. The
commercial interests behind the message are much
better disguised.

How effective is this strategy? According to a survey
commissioned by Porter/Novelli, 89 per cent of
respondents consider ‘independent experts’ a ‘very or
somewhat believable source of information during a
time of corporate crisis’. Sometimes the technique is
used to spread doubt about a product’s hazards;
sometimes it is used to hype or exaggerate benefits.
Pharmaceutical companies use it to create a positive
‘buzz’ around their products. ...

So Why Is the EPA in the NRDC's Hip Pocket?--The
latest science fiction scare story from the Natural
Resources Defense Council (NRDC) concerns the valuable
agricultural herbicide atrazine. Hundreds of studies
by responsible scientists confirm that atrazine is
safe for humans and the environment. But the NRDC
wants it banned, and ALEX AVERY of the HUDSON

this gang of activist lawyers." He also wonders why
the EPA has given $4 million in taxpayer money to help
fund NRDC in its toxic terrorism. [posted 9/8/03]

Unfortunately one thing became obvious while scanning
the list of editorials and stories denouncing and
debunking recent Global Warming research:
A lot of the same writers and scientists names popped
up time and time again, a notable one being a Mr.
PATRICK MICHAELS. Remember that name..more on him
later.

One notable link from this site was to

THE COMPETITIVE ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE.
...
Now, back to Mr. PATRICK MICHAELS. Having witnessed
him repeatedly vent his rather large spleen without
ever saying or producing anything concrete to back up
his virulence against the environmental researchers
via the 'skeptics' site, I decided he deserved a
closer look-see. A search of his name turned up a book
titled "The Satanic Gases", which is NOT a joke,
honestly... Here is a review of the book:

The Satanic Gases...

The book review linked directly to

THE CATO INSTITUTE [Creature of the KILLER KOCH
BROTHERS and the SCAIFE MOB]

who apparently is also the publisher of The Satanic
Gases! Here they are reviewing their own book! What
utter gall..

Here is what THE CATO INSTITUTE has to say for itself
beside the fact that it is a (heavy sigh) 'non-profit
public policy think tank'...

..."Funny funding"

Major media outlets have routinely turned a blind eye
to the corporate financial backing for Cato and other
large think tanks in Washington. Few reporters or
pundits focus on the conflicts of interest involved.

A report by Public Citizen illuminated the industry
money behind the major think tanks campaigning to
strip regulatory authority from the Food and Drug
Administration: "Seven think tanks?the AMERICAN
ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE, the CATO INSTITUTE, the
COMPETITIVE ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE, the HERITAGE
FOUNDATION, the HUDSON INSTITUTE, the PROGRESS AND
FREEDOM FOUNDATION and the WASHINGTON LEGAL
FOUNDATION--received at least $3.5 million between
1992 and 1995 from drug, medical device, biotechnology
and tobacco manufacturers and their corporate
foundations." But mainstream journalists paid scant
attention to who was paying the piper. "Some of the
country's most renowned think tanks, frequently cited
by the American media, are carrying water for the
drug, medical device, biotechnology and tobacco
industries," the public interest group reported
(Public Citizen, Fall/96).

ExxonMobil Emerges as Major Funder of "GREENHOUSE
SKEPTICS"

ExxonMobil has become a major funder of the most
visible "greenhouse skeptics", most of whom who have
traditionally been funded by the coal industry --
including S. FRED SINGER, PATRICK MICHAELS, ROBERT
BALLING AND SHERWOOD IDSO.

ExxonMobil is the world's third largest corporation
with annual profits of about $17 billion. The company
is using some of those profits to confuse the public
discussion of global climate change. ExxonMobil is
sabotaging the work of more than 2,000 scientists from
100 countries by funding the most visible "greenhouse
skeptics" -- one of whom, S. FRED SINGER, publicly
denied receiving oil industry money as recently as
February, 2001.

According to 1998, ExxonMobil documents, the company
directly funds:

S. FRED SINGER's institute, The SCIENCE AND
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY PROJECT as well as another
foundation that promotes Singer's activities; and,

CRAIG IDSO, KEITH E. IDSO AND SHERWOOD IDSO'S
institute: The Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide
and Global Change.

ExxonMobil grants have indirectly funded PATRICK
MICHAELS and Robert Balling. ...

...PATRICK MICHAELS:

ExxonMobil also funds The CATO INSTITUTE's Environment
and Natural Resources program. In 1998, ExxonMobil
gave a grant of $15,000 to the Institute's program.
PATRICK MICHAELS is a Senior Fellow in that CATO
PROGRAM.

Michaels has been one of the most visible of the
"greenhouse skeptics." In a critique of Michaels'
work, printed in an appendix to The Heat Is On, Dr.
Tom M. L. Wigley, senior scientist at the National
Center for Atmospheric Research wrote:

"Michaels' statements on [the subject of computer
models] are a catalog of misrepresentation and
misinterpretation…Many of the supposedly factual
statements made by Michaels are either inaccurate or
are seriously misleading." Wigley concluded that no
only would Michaels' work not pass the scientific
peer-review process, it is so deeply flawed it would
not even be accepted for such review.

MICHAELS HAS RECEIVED HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS IN
INDUSTRY FUNDING FROM THE GERMAN COAL MINING
ASSOCIATION, the WESTERN FUELS ASSOCIATION and CYPRUS
MINERALS, a leading funder of the virulently
anti-environmental "Wise Use Movement" of the early
1990s.

His newsletter, "World Climate Report" , was funded by
The WESTERN FUELS ASSOCIATION and sent free of charge
to every member of the Society of Environmental
Journalists.

Michaels is on the board of the GREENING EARTH
SOCIETY, a creation of The WESTERN FUELS ASSOCIATION

The article next targets the magazine Ozone Action for
its article attacking S. FRED SINGER, a leading
opponent of global warming theory.

Ozone Action, asserts the article, asserts that SINGER
HAS CONNECTIONS WITH THE MOONIES, a religious
organization. "That is the most laughable charge,"
asserts the article, which while admitting that Singer
once worked in an office owned by the Moonies,
disavows any other connection with the group.

But the connection is fairly clearly documented.
Singer is the president of SEPP, the The SCIENCE AND
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY PROJECT. SEPP was founded in 1990
as an affiliate of the WASHINGTON INSTITUTE FOR VALUES
IN PUBLIC POLICY, a Moon-funded think tank that
provided SEPP with free office space. See the
Unification Church's account of the Washington
Institute here. The connection is also document in the
Washington Post.
http://www.sepp.org/
http://unification.net/activities/washinst.html
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/national/longterm/cult/unification/image.htm

So perhaps the connection ascribed isn't so
"laughable". It is certainly a far cry from "lies and
distortions".

Startup funding and office space were provided by the
WASHINGTON INSTITUTE FOR VALUES IN PUBLIC POLICY, an
think-tank created by the Unification Church.

SEPP accepted a one-year donation of office space from
the WASHINGTON INSTITUTE FOR VALUES IN PUBLIC POLICY,
a now-defunct think tank affiliated with Rev. SUN
MYUNG MOON's Unification Church. [4] SEPP has
subsequently dissociated itself from the Washington
Institute, strengthening its links with the
conservative Virginia-based GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY.
In 1998, SEPP received a $10,000 donation from
ExxonMobil [5].

...SEPP's board of directors and advisers is,
according to Grist, "made up primarily of retired
scientists no longer active in the field, and many of
whom are also on the board of the closely linked
GEORGE C. MARSHALL INSTITUTE."

Western Fuels Association. (WFA)

While many of the major direct corporate efforts to
wish away global warming have waned, and indeed a
growing number of major corporations have acknowledged
that global warming is real and deserving of action,
The WESTERN FUELS ASSOCIATION, a non-profit
cooperative which provides coal to member electric
utilities, seems absurdly opposed to the scientific
consensus and even the slightest progress on the Kyoto
Treaty. THE ADVANCEMENT OF SOUND SCIENCE COALITION,
formerly in the forefront of professional, corporate-
backed global warming skeptics, apparently no longer
exists. The GLOBAL CLIMATE COALITION, once a popular
source for the "opposing" minority view to
anthropogenic climate change, evidently became too
widely known as an industry front group to serve as a
credible foil to independent science. WESTERN FUELS
has stepped in to close the gap.

As a dollars and cents indication of WESTERN FUELS
ASSOCIATION's commitment to the anti-Kyoto cause, the
association is actually operating "in the red" to
support their anti-global warming habit. The 1998 WFA
annual report stated,

We lost $583,000 in 1997, even though coal
deliveries were substantially over 20 million tons.
1997's "red ink" was not due to adverse operational
performance either in coal deliveries or by
management... On an ongoing basis, Western Fuels is
operating substantially "in the black." OUR HALF-
MILLION DOLLAR SHORTFALL IS DUE ENTIRELY TO OUR
ADVOCACY IN THE AREA OF CLIMATE CHANGE. The Board of
Directors CONTINUES TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL SUPPORT to
programs designed to turn back efforts by the Clinton
Administration to dial- out coal-fired generation in
the US energy supply mix... (emphasis added).

The report added, "Western Fuels does not stand alone,
but we occupy a unique and important position with
respect to principled defense against the
environmental onslaught that continues to come at
American society under the rubric of apocalyptic
global warming."

The Western Fuels Association has spun off a number of
new projects in the past year to amplify their new
message. A web venture, www.globalwarmingcost.org, was
launched a little over a year ago to emphasize
industry projected costs of decreased carbon dioxide
emissions. It a is a "grassroots mobilization" effort
created for WFA by BONNER AND ASSOCIATES, a public
relations firm that prides itself on faking grassroots
campaigns for corporate clients. The GREENING EARTH
SOCIETY WAS UNVEILED ON EARTH DAY 1998 to spread the
good news about excess atmospheric carbon dioxide. The
Society's most recent additions, the fossilfuels.org
web site and the Center for the Study of Carbon
Dioxide and Global Change, have sprung up in the last
several months to serve as additional mouthpieces for
the Western Fuels-approved "science."

In addition to front groups it is connected with, WFA
is in partnership with the NATIONAL MINING ASSOCIATION
to fight the EPA designation of carbon dioxide as a
pollutant. (WESTERN FUELS CEO FRED PALMER also serves
as the Chair of the Legal Affairs Committee of the
NATIONAL MINING ASSOCIATION).

GREENING EARTH SOCIETY. (GES)

In what could be its largest event to date, GREENING
EARTH SOCIETY is releasing a new 30-minute video at
Basin Electric's annual meeting on November 13 1998.
The sequel to Western Fuels' "The Greening of Planet
Earth" is creatively titled, "The Greening of the
Planet Earth Continues." The video release will be
followed by a panel discussion with four veteran
global warming skeptic scientists, PATRICK MICHAELS,
ROBERT BALLING, SALLIE BALIUNAS AND SYLVAN WITTWER,
all of the GREENING EARTH SOCIETY. The GES will
provide a satellite uplink of the event which will be
beamed to reporters in the National Press Club in
Washington, DC. A spokesman for Basin Electric told
the Bismarck Tribune that they considered having
scientists on the panel who would represent the
opposing view, but "decided having the media question
their panelists was [sic] sufficient."

Basin Electric is "a dues paying member" of the
Greening Earth Society, and a "Class A" member of the
Western Fuels Association. Corporate membership to
Greening Earth starts at $1,000, and Basin Electric
has declined to disclose the amount of their support
to Greening Earth. (Bismarck Tribune, September 27,
1998). Basin Electric general manager Bob McPhail also
serves as the president of Western Fuels Association.
